Daphne Cowen
Although she studied textiles at Liverpool College of Art, embroidery was not part of the course. However, it is in this area that Daphne has specialised in recent years.
She was in charge of Textiles at Chester College before her full time teaching post at Moreton Hall, Oswestry.
Since then she has enjoyed experimenting with various textile skills, developing ideas using both hand and machine embroidery; often working on silk paintings and using quilting and collage techniques. Much of her recent work depicts the changing Welsh landscape, which she loves and amidst which she has lived for more than thirty years.
Her work has been shown at the Grosvenor Museum, Chester; The Royal International Pavilion, Llangollen; The Clwydian Art exhibitions at Ruthin Town Hall; Rhuddlin, Ruthin and Llandudno Libraries; The Silk Top Hat Gallery, Ludlow; National Trust venues at Penrhyn Castle and Erddig Hall; Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw,Llanbedrog; The Cambrian Academy, Conwy and most recently at The Llanwrst Almshouses Museum.
Her submission was chosen for “The Welsh Artist of the Year” Exhibition in St David’s Hall, Cardiff in 2003 and she has received awards at the North Wales Open; Llangollen Open and at Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, Llanbedrog. In June 2007 she was awarded second prize in the Embroiderer’s Guild competition for her hand embroidered collage, entitled “Snowdonia”.
Daphne is a member of the North Wales Fine Art Society
