zebra stallion

zebra stallion

This is a Plains zebra (Equus burchelli) otherwise known as Burchell’s zebra. The normal social unit for zebras is one stallion with a herd of four or five mares and their young. It is particularly difficult to distinguish males from females in the field. Males are slightly larger and often the last to run when disturbed, but this is not always the case. To really tell you need them to run away and move their tails out of the way as the male has a narrow black stripe between the back legs and the female has a wide black stripe.
